Opportunities with Common Weal

As you know, Common Weal is funded entirely by individual donations and this means that we'll never have the resources (money) that some think tanks enjoy. It does mean that with careful allocation of our resources, we can be independent of vested interests and put forward our agenda for an 'All of Us First" Scotland without undue influence, so this is a good time to show our gratitude for all of our donors who contribute on a regular basis and keep us afloat doing the work we know is important for Scotland.

If you're interested in volunteering with Common Weal, we've recently revisited how we empower our volunteers and have set up some purpose-driven groups to ensure that all volunteers are recognised for their amazing work.

We have delivered some great work recently, but our staff has been working very hard without enough support. Now it's time to change that so we currently are looking for two new staff members: a Policy Coordinator and a Networks Coordinator. They will work closely with the existing team and take on responsibility for some of our most important work, helping to deliver new policy papers and getting our ideas out to the public.

Right now, these are 'working from home' roles but there are always meetings to go to, events to manage and we're looking forward to getting back out there next year in a big way. If you're looking for your next opportunity, have a read below.

The two roles are described in full below. Each of these roles is 28 hours per week, but some evening and weekend working is sometimes required. The closing date for applications for both positions is 26th November 2021 and applications should complete the application form and send it with a CV and covering letter to amanda@common.scot. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview the week commencing 6th December with a potential start date in early January.

Policy Coordinator

The Policy Coordinator will work closely with our current staff and our working groups on a wide range of ideas. They'll attend working group meetings (that are sometimes in the evenings), write up notes and do a first edit of policy papers, as well as coordinate across various policy areas to deliver papers in a timely manner. This is a role that needs great project management skills, a good understanding of the policy making process and exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.

Full job description and application form below.

Networks Coordinator

The Networks Coordinator will be a pivotal person in the Common Weal staff team, with responsibility for strengthening relationships with donors and subscribers, as well as growing our volunteer teams and Local Groups. This is partly a community engagement role and partly related to fundraising. The individual appointed will be responsible for arranging events, street stalls and meetings (online where necessary) and will have experience of engagement and outreach.
