Graph of the Week - Carbon Capture Pricing
At current prices, the cost of capturing the carbon emitted by burning coal, oil or gas would add between 50% and 150% of the current “market price” of each of them.
However the cost of emitting that carbon into the atmosphere is estimated to be more than $1,000 per tonne which means that without carbon capture or effective carbon taxation, fossil fuel companies receive an implicit subsidy of up to 90% of the cost of their product due to them not having to pay for the impacts of their pollution.
