Opposition to the Opening of a Strip Club in Kirkcaldy
The latest campaign Common Weal Fife has been involved in is the campaign against the opening of Sin' Strip Club in Kirkcaldy. For us as a group, this is not just about the local impact that we believe the club will have on our communities but also how this issue ties in and contributes to the mainstream tolerance of misogyny and sexism today.
Although the club is only a microcosm of a much larger problem, we believe that these small pockets of gender-based exploitation all across the world culminate in a world where the President of “the free world†can freely level misogynistic comments at anyone he pleases. This is just symptomatic of the uneven balance of power relations which are perpetuated by strip clubs and similar establishments. As a group, we are against all forms of exploitation whether it be gender-based or otherwise.
In line with the petition we released in opposition to the club, we will continue to campaign on this issue. We support the the Scottish Government's Violence against women and girls (VAWG) policy and the Equally Safe strategy within it.
Our vision is of a strong and flourishing Scotland where all individuals are equally safe and respected, and where women and girls live free from all forms of violence and abuse, as well as the attitudes that perpetuate it.
We are proud to stand alongside Women Together Fife (WTF), in the campaign and the debate we have managed to spark in the media regarding this issue. We also look forward to a clarification from David Torrance MSP regarding hs position on the matter.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign.
